| Background | Lilly Huntley (nee Burns) was born October 1874 in Oldham, Lancashire, England. She was educated in the Bradford District of Manchester and subsequently moved to Cardiff where by 1901 she became a nurse at the Workhouse Hospital. Lilly married Fred Huntley in Cardiff during 1902 and the couple had two sons, Thomas born 1903 and Fred born 1906. By 1911 Lilly had become widowed and was living at Gelligaer Street and was employed as a Visiting Health Nurse. She joined the Territorial Force Nursing Service on the 1 September 1914 as a Staff Nurse and was promoted to Sister in May 1916. Later that year she was presented with the Royal Red Cross medal by King George V at Buckingham Palace. During the War Lilly served at the Western General Military Hospital, Howard Gardens, Cardiff. Lilly continued her medical career after the War and became a Superintendent of Midwives with Cardiff Council. Lilly Huntley died in 1952. |
