BackgroundThe Aubrey family inherited lands in Llantrithyd (Glamorgan) when Sir Thomas Aubrey, second son of Dr William Aubrey married Mary, daughter and co-heiress of Anthony Mansel of Llantrithyd in 1586. Sir Thomas's second son, Sir John Aubrey, a strong Royalist was created baronet in 1660. Sir John's heir was Sir John Aubrey (d 1700), 2nd Bart., of Llantrithyd who married secondly, Mary, second daughter and following the death of her brother, Edward in 1674, co-heiress of William Lewis of the Van, Glamorgan, Boarstal and Brill, Buckinghamshire. Mary died childless and settled considerable maternal estates away from her paternal uncle, Lewis of Van, and upon the Aubreys of Llantrithyd. The estate descended in the male line until the death of Sir John Aubrey, 6th Bart. in 1826 6th Bart., his only son having died in 1777, the estate and title passed to his nephew and male heir, Sir Thomas Digby Aubrey, 7th Bart. who died childless. The estate passed to the final heiress of that surname, Elizabeth Sophia Aubrey, who received the unentailed estates of the 6th Bart., with remainder to heirs male. On the death of her son, Charles Aubrey Aubrey (formerly Ricketts), the estate passed to the nearest male heir, Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher (1835-1910), 4th Bart. Sir Henry assumed the surname and arms of Aubrey by royal licence in 1903. He was the great-grandson of Sir Henry Fletcher, 1st Bart., of Clea Hall, Cumbria, whose wife, Catherine (d. 1816) was the grand daughter of Sir John Aubrey (1680-1743), 3rd Bart. of Llantrithyd. Sir Henry (1835-1910) died without issue and was succeeded by his brother, Sir Lancelot Aubrey-Fletcher (1846-1937).
