**********

The Motorway Archive Trust was established under a Declaration of Trust in 1999 and registered as a charity in January 2000. Its object was to advance public education by acquiring and making available at local and national repositories archives relating to the creation of the British motorway network. In Wales a Regional Committee was formed to carry forward this work, leading to the publication of the book 'The Motorway Achievement: Building the Network in Wales' (2010) by Brian Hawker and Howard Stevens. The trust developed from the suggestion of Sir Peter Baldwin, Permanent Secretary of the Department of Transport that an archive relating to the motorway achievement in the UK should be created by those involved in the work to safeguard the records for present and future research. The trust has produced publications, educational packages, web sites and collected archive material, depending heavily on the work of about 200 volunteers. The aim was to produce three printed volumes on strategy, policy, and programmes (published 2003), knowledge and practice (published 2002) and a record of scheme achievement for each region of the UK (published 2004) with supplementary publications on bridges, maintenance, regional accounts, future policy and practice, and other matters.

The collection records the development of the M4 motorway across south Wales, the Severn Crossing, and A55 ('North Wales Expressway') along the north coast and several trunk roads with general administrative records relating to the Motorway Archive, reports and publications, and preparatory and background papers to the publication of 'The Motorway Achievement', and roads programme annual reports. The editorial committee in Wales has included Brian Hawker OBE, former Head of Roads Major Projects at the Welsh Office (now Welsh government); Denys Morgan OBE, former Director of Environment and Highways of West Glamorgan County Council, and Professor Ron Bridle, former Chief Highway Engineer, Department of Transport, and Director of Transport and Road Research Laboratory.

The Motorway Archive Trust was wound up as a charity in December 2014. Their responsibilities were passed to the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation.
