BackgroundAgnes Irene MacDonald (1898-1992), known as Rene, was the daughter of Scottish migrants to Merthyr Tydfil. She was an early student at Cardiff University she studied for a BSc in Biology and Botany. She then undertook an MSc at Swansea University, before achieving a PhD in Geology at Imperial College of Science. After lecturing at Bedford College for Women in London, she returned to Merthyr to become a senior mistress in biology and botany at Merthyr County Grammar School, where she worked until her retirement in the 1950s. Relatively late in life she married Mr T. L. James, the former Head Postmaster of Llandrindod Wells, in 1966, and later went to live in an artists' colony in Gloucestershire, becoming an amateur painter.
DescriptionThe collection consists primarily of the papers of Agnes James, including: diaries, 1960-1992; education certificates, 1913-1925; PhD thesis, c. 1925; copy of application for employment to Bedford College for Women, London, 1926; copy of Aberdare Hall entrance form, c. 1920; Aberdare Hall centenary tea-towel, 1985; academic notes, [20th century]; material relating to Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, 1961; photographs, 1917-1970s; watercolour paintings and sketches, [20th century]; correspondence, c. 1960; papers & correspondence from the Botanical Society of the British Isles concerning a survey of plant species, 1954-1955, 1962; obituary, 1 Oct 1992. Also included are needlework samples of Cora A MacDonald, [1920s] and details of the estate distribution and income for Evelyn Alice MacDonald, 1959.
