TitleRhondda/Ystradyfodwg School Board Records
BackgroundFollowing the Education Act 1870, making education compulsory between the ages of 5 and 13, School Boards were established to provide education in areas where no such provision existed. Before 1878, responsibility for running schools in the Rhondda lay solely with voluntary agencies until the Rhondda (Ystradyfodwg) School Board was set up to take over the running of a number of the colliery schools. After the Education Act 1902, responsibility for elementary education passed to the Local Education Authorities within county councils and county boroughs.
