BackgroundDavid Embleton Harbottle was a mining engineer who went to Hughesovka about 1906. In 1910, he married Sarah Ellen Godber, who had gone to Hughesovka as companion to Mrs Horrox, wife of the Resident Consulting Engineer. In 1914, the Harbottle’s moved to Karaganda (in present-day Kazakhstan), where they stayed until 1919.
