BackgroundHuzovka , later called Stalino, now Donetsk, in Ukraine was the site of an iron and steel works established in 1870 by John Hughes, originally from Merthyr Tydfil. Many Welsh workers and their families emigrated there. Susan Edwards was an archivist in the Glamorgan Record Office responsible for the creation of the Huzovka Research Archive there. In 1992 she was awarded a Churchill travelling fellowship to visit Ukraine and Russia.
