BackgroundJohn Hughes set up New Russia Company in 1869, and established an industrial complex including blast furnaces, iron ore mines and collieries in the Ukraine in the 1870s. The town of Hughesovka grew up around the works. John Hughes, his wife and some of his children settled in Hughesovka, four of his sons marrying and raising families of their own, and taking over the running of the works after the death of their father. Arthur James Hughes (born 1874) was the eldest son of Arthur David Hughes, fourth child of John Hughes.
