BackgroundAnnie Gwen Jones went to Hughesovka (Yusovka), an industrial town in south Russia founded by John Hughes of Merthyr Tydfil, as tutor to the grandchildren of John Hughes. She went to Hughesovka in 1889 with the family of Arthur Hughes and his wife, formerly Miss Augusta James of Llanover. Annie Gwen Jones remained with the family for four years before returning to Glamorgan to marry Edgar W. Jones, later headmaster of Barry Boys School.
