BackgroundDavid Price Jenkins, a mining engineer, worked for the New Russia Company at Hughesovka between about 1888 and 1899. His wife joined him with three children, Thomas, Margaret Hannah and Edward. A fourth child, Agnes Maud, was born at Hughesovka. After returning to Britain the Jenkins ran a public house, the Griffin, in Blaenavon, later the Lion Hotel. Further children were born to the family after their return.
