Background | Percy Cartwright was a chemist at the New Russia Company from 1903 to 1917, after training at Cyfarthfa Ironworks. His father, Edward, a printer and bookseller in High Street Dowlais, was originally from Rhyl, Flintshire, and served his apprenticeship with Gwasg Gee, Denbigh. In August 1911 Percy Cartwright married Gwladys Ann Morgan, a UCW Aberystwyth graduate, whose father had a wholesale bakery in Dowlais. Their two children were born in Hughesovka, Ella Cecil in 1913 and David Edward in 1917. The family left Hughesovka after David’s birth, travelling north alone and joining up with a party from Hughesovka at Voss in Norway before crossing to Britain. The Cartwrights returned to Dowlais. |
