Background | It is known that Archibald Balfour was in St. Petersburg, Russia, in the 1860s, and that three of his children were born there. Their names are listed in the records of the chapel of the Biritish Factory (afterwards called the Russia Company). He was an associate of John Hughes, although it is not known how the two men met. He was an early shareholder in the New Russia Company, and Chairman of the Board of Directors from at least 1900 to 1914.
Archibald's son, Arthur Montagu Balfour, was in Russia from the 1890s to 1914. He was Commercial Director of the New Russia Company, working closely with William Wiskin, who was Commercial Manager.
Edith, daughter of Archibald Balfour, married the Right Honourable Alfred Lyttelton, a trustee of the New Russia Company. |
