BackgroundYoung Alexander Calderwood went to Hughesovka as an engineer in 1906, with his wife Jessica. They had five children, the third of whom, Mavis, was born in 1910. The family left Hughesovka at the end of July 1917, and arrived back in Aberdeen on 17 September, after travelling across Russia, Finland, Sweden and Norway by train, and then by sea in a naval convoy.

Susan Edwards, Senior Assistant Archivist of the Glamorgan Record Office, visited Mavis Campbell, née Calderwood, at her home in 1993, and recorded an oral history interview.
