BackgroundJohn Hughes joined the Millwall Engineering and Shipbuilding Company in 1860. The firm’s success in the British Admiralty’s armour-plating trials of 1864 brought Hughes to the attention of the Russian government and led to his venture in the Ukraine with the New Russia Company. The Millwall Engineering and Shipbuilding Company was situated in the Thameside area of London, and these maps were obtained by the Glamorgan Record Office while researching the history of John Hughes.
