BackgroundJohn Hughes began his career at the Cyfarthfa ironworks, moving to the Uskside Engineering Works during the early 1840s. The Works specialised in ships’ equipment, anchors and chains, and later developed a range of colliery engines and winding gear. During his time at Uskside Hughes patented various inventions in armaments and armour plating.
